Welcome to your September eZine.
This month we pause.
Throughout the months since March, we have tried to bring ideas forward in the eZine to assist you in making the best of this time. With all its restrictions and also its sorrows, Covid has given us opportunity to determine what we can do as individuals to come out of it stronger both professionally and personally.
Not this month. This month our focus is not on personal strength, but strength for a cause and a conversation that cannot end with the last news cycle.
One of our national values is equality. Yet in the incidents of this summer, we see so clearly and undeniably that although equality may be a value, it is not demonstrated equally to all segments of society. The racism that is inherent in the fabric of our society cannot continue. It is time to examine our processes and perceptions. It is time to share the work our fellow Black and Brown Americans have been doing for centuries. The work for equal justice, access, and respect. These things we value for ourselves. We must work to make sure it is valued for all.
This month we bring to you what we have at Tero to get you thinking but more importantly acting on this issue.
The September Insight video presented by Tero president Ro Crosbie gives a call to action for three steps we can all take to combat racism.
The Label Game is an audio chapter from Your Invisible Toolbox that spotlights educator Jane Elliot whose classroom experiment in the 1960’s has transcended time as a testament to the dangers of discrimination.
We have two articles for you, one by Tero vice president Deborah Rinner on discrimination targeted at Asian Americans during Covid, and the other by Dr. Harwant Khush on Unconscious Bias.
We have gathered a Tero Tips video on Bias, as well as two Your Invisible Toolbox shows on communicating with inclusivity and sensitivity as well as the dangers of stereotyping. And last, in lieu of our monthly quiz, we include a link for you to take an implicit bias test.
It is our mission and our intent to keep the conversation and the work going towards the goal of diversity, equity and inclusion. The time is up for dropping the conversation and the work as things move forward. This is on our backs, and must move forward with us in every encounter, conversation, learning and reflection. Doing this will strengthen us all.
Prejudice and discrimination begin early on in life-a California student survey found nearly a fourth of students across grades have reported being harassed or bullied at school due to their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. As a result, everyone has likely experienced or witnessed these behaviors at some point in time.
Expressing unconscious biases by openly expressing opinions and being judgmental about other peoples' behavior and actions has become a pervasive phenomenon in contemporary societies. Not a day goes by when we do not hear or read about people unfairly assessed on their biological inheritance, religion, ethnic beliefs, sexual orientation, weight, and other such characteristics.
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to report. The IAT may be especially interesting if it shows that you have an implicit attitude that you did not know about.
For those of us who have been in virtual meeting after virtual meeting we've, no doubt, seen it all. In this interview we chat with Liz Cooney of Tero International about your "virtual presence".
